EDITORIAL: Investing in Youth Education is Investing in Caraga’s Future

When we look at the challenges facing the Caraga Region – poverty, underemployment, brain drain to Metro Manila and overseas – one factor emerges repeatedly as both a root cause and a potential solution: education. The quality of schooling our young people receive today will determine whether our region thrives or stagnates in the decades to come.

The statistics are sobering. Despite improvements in enrollment rates, our region continues to lag behind national averages in educational achievement. Too many students drop out before completing basic education. Those who do graduate often find themselves unprepared for either higher education or the workforce.

The reasons are well-known: inadequate facilities, teacher shortages, limited access to technology and learning materials, and the economic pressures that force families to prioritize immediate income over long-term educational investment. Addressing these challenges requires sustained commitment and resources from all levels of government.

But investment in education is not merely about buildings and textbooks. We must also examine what we are teaching our young people. Are our curricula preparing students for the economic opportunities emerging in our region? Are we teaching them to be critical thinkers who can solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances?

Technical and vocational education deserves particular attention. Not every student will pursue a university degree, nor should they need to in order to achieve a dignified livelihood. Strong TVET programs can prepare young people for careers in tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors crucial to our regional economy.

We also urge greater investment in education programs that celebrate and preserve our regional culture and heritage. Young Carageños should graduate understanding the history of the balangay, the traditions of our indigenous communities, and the unique contributions our region has made to Philippine civilization.

Our children are our future. Let us invest in them accordingly.
